Sports Management and Entertainment Marketing Class Participates in Leadership and Job Shadow Opportunities With the Syracuse Crunch

The Sports Mangement and Entertainment Marketing class in Canastota had the opportunity to  partner with the Syracuse Crunch Hockey Club in a unique experience.  Management Level Personnel of the Syracuse Crunch served as guest speakers on eight occassions, sharing their specific job duties at the Crunch as well as their educational background with the class.  Throughout the course of the season, students in the class developed a thorough understanding of how the Syracuse Crunch Hockey Club operates.

Students and their families were invited to attend a Crunch game on Monday, January 16 where they were introduced to key management personnel with the Syracuse Crunch.  On April 5, students visited the Crunch for an in-depth tour and follow-up to their job shadowing experience.  Students were able to meet with several team players and ask questions.

On March 26, students participated in a Job Shadow experience during the Syracuse Crunch – Utica Comets game.  Students shadowed in the following departments:  Community Relations, Broadcasting, Public Relations, Social Media , and Game Operations.  Students shadowed and assisted staff members throughout the evening, learning how each department supports the entire production of a game.  Students enjoyed being able to see the ice from different angles as various departments worked to give the fans a great experience.

Students who worked in broadcasting were able to assist with interviewing players and were stationed in the press box during the game.  They were able to watch as statistics were taken and saw first hand what goes into the event.  One of the students shadowing in Public Relations commented on how it was difficult not being able to cheer for the team while personnel did their job.

Students earned Digital Badges throughout the program that they can showcase as evidence of skills and experiences gained.

This is the first year of the BOCES Sports Management and Entertainment Marketing class held at Canastota.  The class is looking forward to once again partnering with the Syracuse Crunch next year and even extending the partnership to include actual internship positions for some students.

Greater Lenox Ambulance Service Partnership

Greater Lenox Ambulance Service, Inc. (GLAS) is partnering with Canastota Central School to encourage students to volunteer in their Jr. EMS Corps. Their goal is to begin getting students interested, starting in the 8th grade. Once a student is 15-years old, they can actually become a member, and at 16-years-old they can ride along. At 17-years old they can be trained as an EMT. Those who are interested in signing up can send an email to etucci@canastotacsd.org. They will be required to fill out and submit an application. GLAS hopes that with the district's help, students will rise to the occasion and help their community.

As a junior member of GLAS, you will have an opportunity to gain emergency medicine experience, under the direction and supervision of a paramedic/EMT, while serving your community.

Trained junior members will aid paramedics and EMTs in patient care and, upon turning 17, may take a class to become a certified EMT.
